A Virginia fertility clinic called the Genetics & IVF Institute is trying to bring a gender selection technique known as sperm sorting to mainstream America, touting it as a positive advance for families and society. However, if choosing the gender of children becomes widespread, the results could be disastrous in terms of attitudes toward the sexes and a disparate ratio of males to females.
Do we really want a society in which prospective parents can choose whether to have a boy or a girl? Are we prepared to open the door to technology that allows couples to select not only their child’s sex, but also his or her appearance, height and intelligence?
To what extent and at what cost are we willing to grant life to those who we perceive to be the most desirable, while denying life to others?
The desire for ‘designer babies’ brings to mind Hitler’s quest for a ‘master race.’ In both cases, destruction of groups of people is the result.
